The Wandering Elf-friend, Or How Tolkien Couldn’t Start the Silmarillion (Part 1)

STM-Silm-20150128The Wandering Elf-friend, Or How Tolkien Couldn’t Start the Silmarillion (Part 1).

So it began, the return of the Silmarillion read, slow-cook style.

This is cuisine vastly different from the read-along on the tumblr group. I think of the tumblr read-along as hors d’oeuvre, and this slow-cook as the entrée. Because the Silm does need several passes to “get”.

Where the tumblr schedule was a chapter a week (usually), this is one page a blogpost. Frankly, after having gone through the Silm at what seemed like breakneck speed, this is a refreshing and welcome change in pace. Also, where the tumblr focus was on reading the chapter, with the interactivity of games and stuff for readers to respond to (free-will accord applies), this page a blogpost adds the very interesting research angle, talks about the ideas and thought process that’s not found in other publications as well.

Already, this first post is delving into the meta of the Silm’s pre-publication incarnations. And without having turned the Silm’s bookcover too. Can’t wait for more.
