Happy 2015 + 2014 in review – wordpress and tumblr

Happy New Year to one and all. I am amazed that both my wordpress and tumblr accounts have followers at all. Thank you. May you be blessed with love, understanding and success in 2015.

For this short year in review, I would just like to say, blogging about the world of Tolkien is fun. Especially when the obsession bit gets free-range at tumblr. And sweatingtomordor is definitely my discovery of the year.

Movie: When social engineering has a spot at the drawing board [spoiler]

(With this post, my side-trip into BotFA/The Hobbit Movie feels, processing, and even quickie fix-it ficcing ends. The next post on Friday will pick up from where I left off with my notations for the Silmarillion chapters. Yes, the ANGST of Middle-earth cometh! Watch out for Reader: The Silmarillion. Quenta Silmarillion, Chapter 21 “Of Túrin Turambar”.)
========
Thranduil_BotFAWith two viewings of BotFA, it’s enough to make me question if I want to go back for a third time. Very unusual for this fan of the Middle-earth movies. The thing is, I’ve been thinking, and I’m not happy it’s The Tauriel Conundrum having a field day(s) in my noggin, and not Thranduil’s visage. But the compound question of representation, political correction, affirmative action, and the emblematic social engineering in a movie series like The Hobbit is an interesting one.

(Fair warning. This is a LONG spiel, and there may be some controversial or uneasy to process thoughts about society after the cut, so look away now if it’s not your cuppa.)

Christmas Carol Parody: Thranduil Baby (Santa Baby by Eartha Kitt)

Stepping away for a bit from both book-nerding, and square-my-head-about-movie effort. Something a little bit naughty, a little nice, and definitely all tongue-in-cheek. Hosting it here in case it violates some proprietry rule at the family-friendly place where my fellow fanciers of the Elvenking congregate. Fellow Thralls, you know who you are.

For accompanying visual bookends, refer to this meme. And yes, I am aware the original song isn’t technically a carol, but its seasonal vibe is undeniable.

Movie: Confessions of a Thranduil Fan

Thranduil_swordConfessions, by proxy, of a Thranduil!Fan. This is an unlooked for continuation of my BotFA/TH processing. The only difference being my statuses as a movie-firster, and a Book!Thranduil fangirl before the Hobbit movies ever were.

(Almost) Everything else dovetails. Of course I expect, at some future point, to hammer together my very own list of confessions. Until then, this, especially the last two paragraphs, is what I would wave at anyone who asks, “Why Thranduil?”

Where the Dog Star rages

Confession 1: When I read The Lord of the Rings for the first time, I did so without reading The Hobbit. As a result, I had no idea of Bilbo’s journeys, no clue who the hell Gollum was, or get any of the allusions the characters made (especially in The Fellowship of the Ring) to the adventures chronicled in that book. Nonetheless, I enjoyed my first brush with Tolkien immensely, and closed the covers quite satisfied with my foray into Middle Earth.

Didn't get half of that, but i liked it! Didn’t get half of that, but I liked it!

Confession 2: That first journey into Middle Earth was not entirely without some annoyances. The number of songs in the book threw me off a bit. I didn’t understand why these people, who were supposedly going off on a dangerous quest, spent their energy singing ridiculous songs about leaving home or, even worse, sometimes singing in…

Movie: The Hobbit vs The Lord of The Rings. A question of emotional investment [spoiler]

Thranduil_BotFAI’ve only seen BotFA twice so far, which probably made my ruminating phase slower than most. Despite my misgivings about it, and the trilogy as a whole, RingstrilogyposterI’ve been drawing towards a contradictory conclusion about my thoughts and feelings about The Hobbit (TH) trilogy vis-à-vis The Lord of The Rings (LotR). Yes, despite my disgruntlement and passive-aggressive efforts to fix-it, I am more emotional invested in the former, though I enjoy the story of the latter more.

Fan-fiction: A canon-friendly fix-it ficlet about Thranduil and Legolas’ last scene in TH: tBotFA [spoiler]

BotFAFanfic-Thranduil_Legolas

(Source: mydearheroes.tumblr.com)

500-word drabble, set about 2 to 3 years after Legolas bade farewell to Thranduil in BotFA.

Continuing with my processing of BotFa, which also included doing a fangurl!meme, or two, of Thranduil (I’m not sorry though). This is a one-shot fix-it ficlet on the follow-up of the final scene between Thranduil and Legolas in “The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies”, how Legolas got his knives back, and that missing burial ceremony. Because: book-canon, timeline (yes, I am aware of the advancement done to Strider’s age in the movies), and what-the-heck?!

Yup, this here is one for us movie-going book-readers, who may or may not be fangirls. Merry Yule/Post-Yule, everyone.

(Notes:
– revised as of 28 Dec for word count issues, proper quote citation and clarity
final revision revised again 21 Jan
final!final more revision on 23 Jan
– Yup. Again on 24 Jan.

Movie: The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies. My Random thoughts [spoiler]

(Note: The Silmarillion chapter notes are held-over for this week while I work through my impressions and thoughts about “The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies”)

Thranduil_BotFAPlease note: Spoilers galore, for both movies and books after the cut.

Reader: The Silmarillion. Quenta Silmarillion, Chapter 20 “Of the Fifth Battle: Nirnaeth Arnoediad”

Reader deep thought: With the year it happened was everafter called “Year of Lamentation”, that surely was a mark of the abject horror among wars the Nirnaeth Arnoediad was. Unless one sat it out *cough*Doriath*cough*, everyone who signed up seemed to have died or suffered terrible fates in its aftermath. Even those who betrayed the allies were rewarded with just desserts, served cold and ironically bitter by the deceitful Morgoth. But truly, surviving Nirnaeth Arnoediad was really the raw deal to end all bad deals when you were Húrin.
